Aloe Vera is a Super Food

The more we learn about aloe, the more we love it. Let’s look at the nutritional value of Whole Leaf Aloe Vera. Keep in mind these nutrients are found in trace amounts, but WOW this is a long list of goodness! Most consumers know aloe as a topical skin soother, many know it as a juice, or a whole-leaf juice concentrate for the savvy consumer. No matter what, think of aloe as a super food that we should ingest regularly!

Reduce your food bill, increase your health. 10 tips for healthy grocery store trips.

1. Meat is a source of protein, but is often expensive. Using meat alternatives a few times a week can reduce your spending, while still providing you with protein for your meals. Try using beans in place of ground beef in chili, tacos and burritos. Or mash beans and form them into patties as a low-cost alternative to burgers. Eggs are another high protein food that don’t cost as much as meat.

Choosing a plant based protein

Individual or isolated plant based proteins are poorly suited for human use as relied upon by many picky or uneducated vegans or vegetarians. Most lack one or more of the essential amino acids, or simply contain so little of one of them that it is as if the amino acid were absent. Hemp protein is a good example of this. It is a wonderful food, which should be included in your diet, but don’t rely on it as a primary protein source.

This mediterranean quinoa salad is so good that even if you do not like the flavor of quinoa you will not be able to notice it in this! We’ve written about it in recipes before, quinoa is a complete protein and a great alternative to many traditional grains such as rice. I adapted this recipe from one in Feeding the Whole Family by Cynthia Lair. I highly recommend her cookbook!

1/2 c Organic Frozen Strawberries
1 Banana
1/4 c Organic Cranberry Juice (unsweetened)
1/4 c Organic Mangosteen Juice
1/2 c Organic Almond Milk
2 servings Organic Greens Powder
2 servings Organic Wheat Grass Powder
1 serving Chocolate Protein Energizer Plant Based Protein
1 serving Vanilla Plant Fusion Plant Based Protein

Throw all ingredients into a Blender or Vitamix. Enjoy.

Vegan Banana Amaranth Muffins

Amaranth is an ancient grain similar to quinoa, and was used by the Aztecs for centuries. It is gluten free and is considered a complete protein. It also has a larger amount of the amino acid Lysine than most other grains do. It is an excellent source of fiber, iron, magnesium, and calcium. It has a very unique, nutty flavor that goes well with the banana in these vegan banana amaranth muffins.

Blueberry, Banana, Almond Milk, Chocolate, everything but the “kitchen sink” Smoothie or Elixir.

This is kind of an everything but the “kitchen sink” recipe. Sometimes I opt for more liquid so it becomes more of an elixir than a smoothie.

1/3 cup frozen Organic Blueberries
1 medium frozen Organic Banana
20 oz Organic Almond Milk
4 oz ice
2 servings Organic Wheat Grass Powder
1 serving Organic Maca Powder
2 servings PhytoBerry Powder
1 serving Green Vibrance Powder
1 serving Chocolate Whey Protein
1 serving Chocolate Pure Green Protein

Throw all in a blender, blend until all ingredients are throughly mixed.

Serves 2
