Choosing a plant based protein

Individual or isolated plant based proteins are poorly suited for human use as relied upon by many picky or uneducated vegans or vegetarians. Most lack one or more of the essential amino acids, or simply contain so little of one of them that it is as if the amino acid were absent. Hemp protein is a good example of this. It is a wonderful food, which should be included in your diet, but don’t rely on it as a primary protein source.

Hormones and your health

We always hear about hormones and how they affect teens, but it seems like no matter your age, hormones are a relevant topic. In your 20’s and 30’s everything from birth control to cortisol are relevant, not to mention the prevalent issues with health concerns such as fibroids and endometriosis. In your 40’s and beyond hormones are in charge of pre, peri, and post menopause, we also hear a lot about Low T.

I grew up a dancer. Both of my parents were very well known in the world of ballet, tap, jazz, and musical theater. Naturally, it is in my DNA. I made a living into my early 30’s working as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher.  The evolution of that career turned me into a personal trainer and yoga instructor, which I still do today, in my early 40’s.

Want a more effective workout? Picture this: You are sitting on an overhead press machine (image above), or holding two dumbbells and pressing the weight overhead over and over again with the intention of building muscle strength and definition to the shoulder girdle. The “typical” formula used in gyms is performing “3 sets of 15 repetitions (or reps)” of each exercise you do. There is a more effective workout! Read on:

Guest Post: My Yoga Project. A guy’s journey into yoga class, the basic what, why and how.

For thousands of years Yoga has been practiced by many individuals interested it improving their health. With the many differences in Yoga classes and teachings, fitness minded individuals are discovering that Yoga offers something for everyone.

Yoga has a long history. Locations in the Indus Valley show stone carvings of Yoga poses dating back approximately 5000 years. Yoga was thought to be discovered in this country in the 1800’s but was widely known and accepted in the 1960’s due to the interest in eastern cultures.

Nicole’s Yoga Journey

I started my yoga journey when I was 18. I had just started college and joined a gym that offered classes. I started going with my friend and we would stay for the poses (asanas in Sanskrit) but leave right before the meditation (Shivasana). The teacher let me go and knew I would come around eventually. Yoga is a mind and body connection and the final meditation is just as important as the poses themselves.
