Skip the store bought sloppy joe mix which can contain high fructose corn syrup and lots of preservatives. This healthy sloppy joes recipe can be made with tempeh, or traditionally with ground beef. Serve over your favorite buns, bread, or in the case of our photo with crackers and Root Vegetable Slaw and enjoy!
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 small onion, chopped
1 pepper (red, orange, green or yellow), chopped
1 package tempeh
1/8 – 1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon organic Worcestershire sauce
1 cups tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
Crumble the tempeh, or place into a food processor and process until crumbled.
Heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, pepper and garlic and sautee until soft. Add tempeh or ground beef, brown sugar, and spices. Stir to combine. Add red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce and heat through for five minutes. Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook sloppy joes for five minutes, or longer. If mixture is too thick, additional tomato sauce or water can be added.
Enjoy your healthy sloppy joes!
