Eleutherococcus extract, has a rich history—a very rich history and is one of my favorite ingredients in Adrenal Health. In the 16th century, a Chinese herbalist recorded, “I would rather have a handful of [eleuthero] than a cartload of treasures.” Used for centuries in Chinese herbalism, eleuthero, or “ci wu jia”, or you may have heard it referred to Siberian Ginseng in the past, has a primary function of boosting our Kidneys, Heart, and Spleen.
Siberian Ginseng and Emotions
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each of the organs is particularly sensitive to a different emotion. The Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica details, “The Spleen is affected by excessive thinking…and the Kidneys are affected by fear.” In addition, the Heart is thought to house the mind and the spirit.
When these organs are affected unduly by excessive emotion or poor diet and lifestyle choices, we can experience anxiety, insomnia, poor concentration, fatigue, and depression, just to name a few symptoms. Luckily, eleuthero is adept at boosting the Kidneys, Heart, and Spleen in one fell swoop. It’s also considered a general energy, or qi, booster; its slightly warm nature makes it a great fit for those of us who tend to always have cold hands and feet, too.
