Recently I had to have X-rays and an MRI in the same week. Even though the MRI doesn’t use radiation (it uses magnetic imaging), just being in a facility that does multiple kinds of imaging heightens my awareness to radiation exposure. Whenever there is an occasion when I know a friend or family member has been exposed to higher than normal levels of radiation from airplane travel, X-rays, CT scans, cigarette smoke, or manufacturing, I try to remind them that combating exposure to radiation with food and supplements is something to think about.
The truth is, everyone can benefit from thinking about it, because everyday we are exposed to low levels of radiation from our environment. Hopefully we are consuming enough antioxidants to combat the effects of daily exposure. Or, instead of hoping, we can be proactive and make an effort to increase our antioxidant intake.
The first thing I did when I came home from the X-ray appointment was look for a snack. I was instinctively drawn to the brazil nuts (high in selenium), and organic grape juice (high in antioxidants and polyphenols), that we had in the refrigerator. This is the anti-radiation smoothie recipe that was created next.
The greens are important in this recipe, not only for the chlorophyll content, but the sea vegetable content as well. Sea vegetables are an important component to detoxification, especially when it comes to radiation.
Although we are constantly faced with harmful toxins and pathogens in our environment, awareness is the first step to staying healthy. Avoid unhealthy people, places, and things whenever possible, and then remember to utilize healthy food, super foods, and supplements to combat the effects of compromised situations or exposure to an unhealthy environment we can’t control.
